Rice Krispie Jazz

Here’s a recipe that my family loves to make and I doubt you’ll find anywhere else. My grandma had this recipe for years, and I think we’ve all forgotten where it came from. It’s my favourite thing to make for a potluck because I can’t just make it for myself -  it’s too addictive! Rice Krispie Jazz is also extremely rich, so I’d recommend eating squares of it with a glass of milk on hand.

Ingredients:

  • 2 Mars bars, chopped into small chunks (Milky Way bars, if you’re in the U.S.)
  • 2/3 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup butter/margarine
  • 4-5 cups Rice Krispies

Directions:

Heat Mars bars, brown sugar and butter in a pot over medium heat while stirring constantly. Do not boil. When everything has mixed thouroughly together, pour into large mixing bowl and add Rice Krispies. Mix well. Press everything into a lightly greased rectangular pan (8″x8″ or eqivalent) and chill.

Notes: I had forgotten that Mars bars don’t exist in the U.S., they’re only found in Canada and the U.K. by that name. This being from the British side of my family, we of course use Mars bars. Visiting the U.S., though, I’ve found that Milky Way bars work just as well.

I also recommend doubling the recipe as it basically uses an entire box of Rice Krispies, no worries about leftovers.

  1. Thanks for putting this online where I can access it anywhere.. I made it at camp one year for a staff snack (using puffed wheat instead of rice krispies, which was an interesting difference) and was totally making up the recipe. I think it ended up being far more brown sugar than necessary.

  2. Heh yeah it’s nice to have around. I usually get requests for the recipe whenever I bring it to potlucks, too.

  3. I made it again this year at camp (with Rice Krispies this time!) and everyone totally loved it. People began calling it “death by Mars Bar” though - totally addictive!!!
